As the daughter of an accomplished pianist, I can trace my love for music and dancing to an early age, as the strains of Bach, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Chopin, and Schubert filled our home. Recognizing my gift and passion for dance, my parents enrolled me in classical ballet, where I was fortunate to train under renowned teachers before winning a scholarship to continue my ballet studies at the University of Utah. I loved my performing days with Utah Ballet, Utah Opera Company and later, the Monterey Ballet Company. Dancing as the Sugar Plumb Fairy in The Nutcracker while 4 months pregnant remains, perhaps, my fondest memory as a professional dancer. I am convinced that my oldest daughter Abby’s love for dance began in the womb!
As my family grew, I wanted to nurture the love for dance I witnessed in my three daughters because it brought wonder, excitement, self discipline, confidence, respect for others, an outlet for expression, a sense of teamwork, heightened focus and an appreciation for beautiful music to their lives.
Upon returning to Salt Lake and opening my first ballet school two decades ago, I saw how my specific skill set and affinity for teaching young children could truly unlock dance’s magic. I have also witnessed how a foundation in ballet is the most successful springboard for other types of dance and
athletics such as jazz, hip-hop, tap, cheerleading, tumbling, musical theater, and ballroom.
I try always to see the world through a child’s eyes and complement the childhood wonder that first motivates them to twirl, sway, and leap when they hear music. My method for teaching the impressionable ages of three to nine years is to nourish their love and deep-seeded desire to dance through balancing structure with expression, technique with creativity, and self-discipline with self-assurance. Encouraging creative movement whilst teaching proper technique and dance terminology is achieved through constant creativity, from themed weeks to learning about famous ballets to dancing with props. For certain classes, tap is added in November. Our year ends with a much anticipated recital in the spring. I have thoughtfully planned a fun and exciting year and I look forward to getting to know each of my students.
With over 100 students enrolled each year, my whole family, as well as my teachers Annie Leymaster, Eliza English, and Lizzie Kaelberer continue to assist and support me in building the 20-year success of this school. I want to thank all of my wonderful students and parents who I have taught these many years. I have loved every moment dancing with you! —Mimi
